Media Factory’s MF Bunko has updated the official website for Zero no Tsukaima with news that they plan on continuing the fantasy light novel series. Author Noboru Yamaguchi passed away at age 41 on April 4th, 2013, after a two-year battle with cancer. 20 volumes of the series were published, short of an intended 22.
Zero no Tsukaima is a fantasy and comedy-oriented series of Japanese light novels written by Noboru Yamaguchi, with illustrations by Eiji Usatsuka. Media Factory published 20 volumes between June 2004 and February 2011. The series was left unfinished due to the author’s death on April 4, 2013, but the series is planned to continue to its conclusion with a different author. The story features several characters from the second year class of a magic academy in a fictional magical world with the main characters being the inept mage Louise and her familiar from Earth, Saito Hiraga.
Between 2006 and 2012, the series was adapted by J.C.Staff into four anime television series and an additional original video animation episode. The first anime series was licensed by Geneon Entertainment in English, but the license expired in 2011. Sentai Filmworks has since re-licensed the first series as well as picking up the other three series. A manga version drawn by Nana Mochizuki was serialized in Media Factory’s manga magazine Monthly Comic Alive between August 2006 and October 2009. The manga is licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment for release in North America. Three additional spin-off manga were also created, as were three visual novels.

Sou Yurugi, the editor-in-chief for the MF Bunko J imprint of Kadokawa (Media Factory), announced on Thursday that the imprint has decided to continue the Zero no Tsukaima (The Familiar of Zero) light novel series.

Yamaguchi is overseeing the scripts for the series, and Yoshiaki Iwasaki, the director for the first television anime in the franchise, is returning to direct Zero no Tsukaima F. J.C. Staff is again animating the final series, and the company GENCO is again handling production.
Ichiko, who sang theme songs for the first three Zero no Tsukaima television anime series, will return to sing the opening theme song "I'll Be There For You." The main cast members, led by Rie Kugimiya, from the previous anime series are also reprising their roles along with new cast members.
The final television anime series will premiere in Japan on January 7 on the anime channel AT-X.

The official website for the Zero no Tsukaima anime franchiseconfirmed on Tuesday that the fourth and final series will be titled Zero no Tsukaima F. It also confirmed that Zero no Tsukaima F will premiere next January on Chiba TV, AT-X, and other stations. Zero no Tsukaima Kessakusen, selected episodes from previous Zero no Tsukaima anime, will air this October. The November issue of Media Factory's Monthly Comic Alive magazine also published an ad for the final anime series on Tuesday, but with a misprinted premiere date of "January 2011."
Noboru Yamaguchi, the original Zero no Tsukaima light novelist, had reported last month that the previously revealed fourth season of the anime adaptation is slated for next year. He had also reported in August that he left the hospital without incident after his surgery that month for cancer. He had been writing the final series arc of the light novels, and had planned to end the light novels next year before his cancer diagnosis and subsequent operation.
Noboru Yamaguchi, Author of the popular light novel series Zero no Tsukaima, has announced on his twitter account that his health has not yet returned back to normal.
According to his tweet, posted on Saturday, he has readmitted himself into the hospital. He also apologized to his fans for “failing to perform my social obligations” and hopes to get back to them soon.

Thank you all for being so kind as to await my humble works. I would like to report on the progress of my illness.
In February I fell ill, and was diagnosed with cancer.
As the cancer’s progress was unexpectedly fast, it was considered impossible to operate to remove it. Instead, I was put on a course of anticancer drugs.
Around May, I was also diagnosed with gallstones. During abdominal surgery to remove these, it was fortunately confirmed that the cancer had shrunk.
The anticancer drug treatment was continued, and a few days ago during my admission to hospital for treatment, it was determined that it is now possible to operate.
This operation is scheduled for the beginning of August.

Yamaguchi was writing game scenarios when he made his novel-writing debut in 2000 through the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint. He then published the first volume of his most famous work, the Zero no Tsukaima light novel series, through the MF Bunko J imprint in 2004. The series eventually amassed 20 main volumes, five side story volumes, and four anime seasons.
Yamaguchi had confirmed in 2011 that he had advanced-stage cancer that was originally considered inoperable. However, during an unrelated gallstone surgery, the cancerous growth was confirmed to have shrunk in size. Yamaguchi then learned that there was surgery that he could have that might cure the cancer. He reported later that year that this surgery ended without incident, although he returned to the hospital at the end of 2011.
Yamaguchi had planned to end the Zero no Tsukaima light novels last year before his cancer diagnosis and subsequent operation. Media Factory published the 20th of 22 planned volumes in February of 2011. Zero no Tsukaima F, the fourth and final anime series, premiered in 2012.
Yamaguchi had just returned to work last year, and he wanted to resume his Zero no Tsukaima novels at the beginning of this year.
